Dear NW Documentary friends and supporters,
Spring is almost here! The cherry blossoms are starting to show their bright
flowers and the sun is even making an occasional appearance, so it must be
near. And with a new season comes new events and workshops for NW Documentary
Arts & Media.
Each Monday in April, David Weissman and the Portland Art Center are joining us
for a third installment of David's workshop on producing a documentary for
theatrical release. David is the award-winning producer of The Cockettes, a
feature-length documentary about the renowned San Francisco theatrical troupe.
The Portland Art Center hosts this unique class at their temporary digs on SW
5th Avenue (plans are in the works for an impressive SW 4th Ave. space). Stop
in and see what Gavin Shettler and his crew are up to, or visit their website,
www.portlandart.org.
Meanwhile, Ian McCluskey is gearing up for his ninth Exploring Documentary
Production workshop, scheduled to begin April 11. As many of you know, this
accessible ten-week class teaches documentary enthusiasts the basics of
producing their own short doc. Open to everyone, experienced filmmakers and
novices alike, this collaborative opportunity culminates in a public screening
that allows the filmmaker the special experience of showing their work on the
big screen. Sign up today and be sure to tell your friends (haven't we all
wanted to be filmmakers at some point?)!
Speaking of public recognition, several films created during the 2004 workshop
season are being featured at this weekend's 3rd annual Mid-Valley Film
festival, held in Salem. It's a grassroots festival that is just beginning to
take seed. Congrats go out to the producers of:
Siss Boom Bah
Sea Tramp
Girls Get it Up
Pink Pistols
Tuvan
John Calhoun Story
All these films are featured in NW Documentary Workshops Selected Works, Vol. 1,
available on our website.
Finally, stay tuned for the spring issue of the NW Documentary Quarterly, which
will hit the presses in a few weeks. Pick up a copy at any NW Documentary
event, and to get your very own in the mail, just share with us your mailing
address, since this isn't available electronically!
That's all for now. Thanks for your support of NW Documentary Arts & Media!
