Hello!
I hope the holiday season is bringing you all happiness and time for reflection.
As with most people's schedules this time of year, NW Documentary Arts & Media
is busy!
Friday, December 9 marks the ninth public screening of the our 'Exploring
Documentary Production' workshop. This time around, Mission Theater, 1624 NW
Glisan, has stepped up to host the event. Join us that evening at 7 p.m. for a
showing of truly original documentaries (for only $5).
Ian McCluskey, filmmaker and executive director of NW Documentary, teaches the
ten-week workshop open to community members, experienced filmmakers and novices
alike. To date, over 400 students have graduated from the course, and at least
50 original documentaries have been produced.
The public screening gives students an important experience in audience
engagement and seeing their work, literally, on a new scale. Laura Johnson, a
spring 2004 graduate, supports the spirit of the documentary experience.
"The art of bringing people together and working with them to tell a story is
a fascinating and rewarding one," says Johnson. "I hope to do it again and
again."
Collaboration between NW Documentary and Mission Theater came naturally. The
historic theater has roots as a Swedish evangelical mission and longshoreman's
union. Having a screening there stays true to NW Documentary's mission of
recognizing our collective history and providing education through
storytelling.
Other community organizations were involved in this season's workshop, such as
Newspace Center for Photography and MacForce.
The next workshop begins in February. Visit www.nwdocumentary.org for more
details and to learn about NW Documentary's current project, which is a film
about Edward Weston, the American photographer. His wife and subject of many
of his famous nudes, Charis Wilson, attended Portland's Catlin Gable Academy,
and, now in her nineties, Ian and the production crew had a chance to interview
her last summer in her California home. This project is slated for release next
summer. We'll keep you informed of the date!
Happy holidays, and thanks for your support of NW Documentary Arts & Media.
Best,
Jennifer Smith
