                        Community Filmmakers Screen Original Documentaries
NW Documentary Arts & Media Wraps Up Latest Workshop

Portland, OR—Graduates of NW Documentary Arts & Media’s latest Exploring Documentary
Production class will screen their works at 7 p.m. September 2 at the Hollywood Theatre on
NE Sandy Blvd. The event is open to the public with a sliding scale at the door.

The evening screening will mark the completion of NW Documentary’s seventh workshop to
date. Started in 2003, the ten-week series provides both novice and experienced
documentary-makers the experience of producing an original, short film using non-linear
digital editing.

Covering everything from research, scripting, pre-production and interviewing to editing and
post-production, the community workshops have involved over fifty students and resulted in
nearly 30 original works. Participants are required to submit proposals for their ideas, and
Ian McCluskey, instructor and noted documentary-maker, offers real-world critiquing and
information to make certain the project is feasible.

Previous workshops have resulted in such varied topics as a Tuvan throat singer, a look at
people’s morning rituals and an analysis of the Iraq War.

Last year, Elizabeth Atly, a remodeling designer and former French professor, produced her
first documentary using non-linear digital editing. “Siss Boom Bah! No Mah Wah!” screened
at the “Chicks Rock” festival in the southern U.S., a San Francisco women's festival, at In
Other Words Books in Portland, and was awarded honorable mention in the prestigious
international Chris Awards. Deep Dish TV excerpted three minutes of it for a national
broadcast as part of a program on women and war.

Last winter, Magda Diaz, Anna Maj Michelson and Jennifer Smith collaborated to produce
“Gimme Doughnut,” a behind-the-scenes account of Voodoo Doughnut, the late-night
doughnut shop in the heart of Portland’s rock block. Their short film screened at the
Parkdale Film Festival and at Sabala’s Mt. Tabor in June.

Volume I of the workshop’s Selected Works came out recently, and highlights the first year’s
student productions. To order a copy, visit www.nwdocumentary.org or call 503-227-8688.

The next workshop begins September 13. For more information, log on to
www.nwdocumentary.org. The Mission Theater on NW Glisan will be a partner in the
upcoming series.
